Governor’s International Youth Contest named after V.A. Gavrilin

The Governor’s International Youth Contest named after V. Gavrilin is a significant event in a cultural life both of the Vologda region and the whole Russia. The contest has been held since 2001 (every three years). The tasks of the contest are the perpetuation of the memory and outreach of the creative work of the outstanding Russian composer, the native of the Vologda region, the People’s artist of the Russian Federation Valery Gavrilin, the exposure of talented musicians and the consolidation of the best traditions of music pedagogics.

The Governor’s International Youth Contest named after V. Gavrilin is held under the auspices of the Governor of the Vologda region.

According to the main goals of the competition students of regional music schools and colleges can participate in the following nominations: piano, violin, cello, solo vocal performance (academic), composition. There are following age groups: junior group (9 – 12 years), middle group (13 – 16 years) and senior group (17 – 20 years); for composers: middle group (9 – 15 years) and senior group (16 – 20 years). The program consists of two rounds: the 1st, qualifying correspondence round (video-tape recordings for players on stringed instruments and pianists, audio-tape recordings for composers) and the 2nd round, where the competitors perform their program.

Geography of the contest is increasing. Participants of the contest are from USA, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, China, Korea, Turkey, Finland, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Estonia, Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus, Armenia and Uzbekistan. There are a lot of participants from different regions of Russia: Siberia (Abakan, Novosibirsk, Novyi Urengoy, Omsk, Surgut, Kemerovo, Irkutsk, Chita), the Far East (Vladivostok), the Volga region (Saratov, Samara, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Perm’), the North-West region (Vologda, Petrozavodsk, Severomorsk, Kaliningrad, Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Vorkuta), the Central Russia (Vladimir, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Kursk, Voronezh), and the Southern region (Krasnodar, Rostov, Astrakhan).

The contest has a wide public response, it interests professionals and a wide creative audience.

To the mind of the organization committee and the members of the international jury, the level of organization of the contest satisfied the world standards. For the region the contest is of great public and professional importance, especially for reservation and popularization of creative work of V. Gavrilin.
