Local lore museum in Ustyuzhna city was opened in 1921. Since 1936 it is located in the church of the Virgin (17th century).
The exposition includes a section of history, a section of art and an exhibition hall. The section of history introduces visitors to the history of the area from the 11th till the beginning of the 20th century. The exponents that tell about iron-making production of Ustyuzhna Zheleznopolskaya of the 16-18th centuries are of special interest. Iron was extracted in Ustyuzhna from the old times. This trade gained its boom in the 16th century. In old times Ustyuzhna was called Iron Ustyuzhna.
The section of art includes a hall of ancient Russian painting, oil painting of 19-20th centuries and an exhibition of porcelain collection. The hall of the ancient Russian painting is unique, a «tchetverik» (a unit of measurement, consisting of 4 similar subjects) from the cathedral with the memorial iconostasis of the 17th century made by the masters of the Moscow Armoury is survived. The oil painting of the section is represented by the pictures of Aivazovskiy, Kustodiev, Kryzhitskiy, Klever and others.
In one of the halls there is a permanent exposition «Birds and animals of our area». In the exhibition hall more than 10 different exhibitions are held annually.
