






Vologda regional picture gallery was founded in 1952 and the first exposition was opened for the visitors in 1954. Collection fr om the stock of the regional local lore museum consisted from pictures of the leading Russian painters and graphic artists of the end of XIX – beginning of XX centuries put a start for the gallery. Further on the stock was enriched by the central museums of the country: State Tretyakov Gallery, State Russian Museum, Saratov and Nizhegorodsk art museums, and thanks to the support of creative unions and collectors from Moscow, Leningrad and Vologda. In 1960-1970-s the priority task was to enrich the gallery stock by the graphic works.
Now the picture gallery is a multisectoral modern developing art museum with the stock of more than 30 thousand Russian and foreign paintings, graphic works, sculptures, decorative-applied and folk art of XVI-XXI centuries.
The picture gallery has expositions in the Central exhibition hall located in Dormition cathedral of the Vologda Kremlin, Shalamov’s House, Memorial art studio of the Honored Painter of Russia A.Panteleev and Museum creative center «House of Korbakov».
More than 50 exhibitions are arranged annually in the picture gallery. During last years the gallery became the place wh ere big regional and All-Russia topical art expositions are held: «Russian North» (2003), «Potters of Russia» (2000, 2003, 2006), «Image of Homeland» (2006), «Modern folk art of Russia. Traditions and the Present» (2008 г.); personal exhibitions of world famous painters.
A special attention is paid to collecting, studying and exhibiting of pictures of modern Vologda painters.
