Architectural and ethnographic museum of Vologda oblast
Architectural and ethnographic museum of Vologda oblast, a branch of the Vologda State Historical Museum of Art and Architecture, is located in a picturesque place on the bank of the river Vologda, 12 kms from the city. The area of the museum makes 12, 7 hectares.
The main idea of the organizers of these expositions in the Vologda Oblast Museum of Architecture and Ethnography was to reconstruct the original look of a northern village at the end of the XIX – early XX century with all its life. A collective image of different ethnographic phenomena of the Vologda land is offered to the visitors, exposition materials are placed in the conditions natural to them.
Houses and communal rural constructions characteristic of that period have been selected and transported to Vologda from Totma, Nyuksenitsa and Tarnoga regions of Vologda Oblast. In 1992-1993 the first expositions were open there. So, near Vologda has appeared a new unique village – museum.
Now the museum has 2 cult constructions, 1 estate, 12 houses, 17 farm buildings (barns, ice-houses baths). In the buildings the interior of a village log house (izba) is fully reconstructed, with an authentic Russian stove, the Red corner with an icon-case (God’s image and icon-lamp), benches, kitchen utensils, other rural life goods. And that completely reconstructs the way of life and customs of a northern rural family.
The museum is popular among vologodians and visitors of the city. Besides excursions, the museum offers folk calendar events, such, as «Pancake week», «Kuzminky», «Cabbage evenings», «June wreath», and also celebrating of New Year’s Eve, wedding arrangements, organization of anniversaries and presentations which take place in the interior of the Russian peasant house. The museum annually organizes mass festivals with inherent «Russian colouring».
