Photographer Abraham Bam (1923 – 2013) was born in Vologda in the family of the employee. In 1931-1934 he studied at the primary school number 13, then he graduated seven classes in high school № 27. In the mid-1930s, when he lived on the street Mayakovsky, the first time he saw his neighbor's simple photographic equipment: frame for photo printing and machine-monocle. His father bought him a camera «Fotokor» and «The Tourist», which young photographer taking pictures of their friends. Passion for photography did not immediately become the main cause of his life. In 1936-1937 there was one serious passion – football. Playing in the street team, out of which he grew up to sport.

In 1938 he entered the office of a photo retoucher №1 on Moscow Street (now the Soviet Avenue), where the good known master Ivan Petukhov worked. Job of retoucher required knowledge of anatomy of the face and the ability to draw. And he knew how to draw and he loved it. And perhaps, in the career of the photographer would have no interruptions, but the Great Patriotic War began, so he went there as a volunteer in July 1941. Subsequently, he was awarded 16 medals.

In 1946, Abraham Bam returned to Vologda and continued to work in the photos on the Soviet №3 Avenue, № 2 on Lenin Street, and since 1954 in a photo studio on the Stone Bridge in Vologda. Since the 1960s, he became an acknowledged master of photo portrait. His friends and teachers were old photographs of the capital M. Napelbaum, E. Bialy, I. Minsker. Since 1961 he was a member of the Vologda photoclub «Highway» at the Palace of culture of railwaymen, and from 1963 until the end of 1970 – a member of the photo club «Northerner» in the town's House of Culture. Abraham Bam for many years conducted classes with the future of photography. When a photo studio organized seminars with well-known artists, organized the exhibition.

For more than 60 years the studio of Abraham Bam visited by thousands of people, several generations of Vologda. With the excitement people went directly to him as an old friend. What is the secret of master? He often said that all his secret in love for people. «A wicked man cannot be a good photographer», he said. In 2001 Abraham Bam was awarded the title of «Honorary Citizen of the city of Vologda».

Over the years, the photographer has a unique collection of photos – the whole portrait gallery of famous people as the Vologda region and ordinary residents.
