Vologda folk crafts are a distinct and original part of the national culture. They are deeply rooted in the history of the folk and are founded on the succession of generations. Many arts are perfectly developed (attained perfection) today, but most of all Vologda laces enjoy wide popularity.

Vologda is worldwide famous as an old center of lacemaking, and its main mission is to beautify an everyday life of people. One of the biggest art schools of this craft was established here. Vologda laces became far-famed and generally recognized for their high artistry, decorative richness and perfect technique of craftsmanship.

Many well-known folk crafts were developed not only in Vologda, but also in Ustyuzhna, Kirillo-Belozersky monastery and especially in Veliky Ustyug, that was distinguished by extraordinary (exceptional) variety of art crafts, among them are many unique, typical entirely for Ustyug.

The unique art of the so called «northern niello» from Veliky Ustyug arose in the 17 th century and came to its flowering in the 18 th – 19 th centuries. In 17 th – 18 th centuries – time of the economical prosperity of the town – beside the niello many other arts were developed in Veliky Ustyug.

Many other kinds of art were flourishing there: open-work iron smithery, enamel, filigree, hammered ironwork, unique handicraft of Velikiy Ustyug «frosted finish on tin-plate», birch-bark carving (so called»Shemogsa carving») and, finally, icon painting.

Centers of traditional folk culture were established in many districts of the region. One of their main tasks is to preserve and develop folk arts and crafts.
