Many-sided «Frescoes of the North»

Again for some days Vologda turned into the festival capital. All is simple – fr om November, 27 till December, 1, Vologda land hosted III Open Festival of documentary and animated films for children and youth «Frescoes of the North» named in honour of film director Yury Polovnikov.

Organizers of this event were the Government of the Vologda area, the Department of culture of the Vologda area, the Union of the Cinematographers of Russia, the House of cinema of Russia cinematographers, with the support of the Federal agency on culture and cinematography of the Russian Federation.

This year visitors fr om all our country and from abroad came to the festival. There were participants from Norway, Bulgaria, Belarus, Germany, even from Cuba. Sergey Miroshnichenko, a documentary film director, the honored worker of arts of the Russian Federation was the president of the festival. The films shown at the festival were estimated by very competent jury members: Valentina Gurkalenko, the art director of film studio «Lennauchfilm», Khaukur Khaukson, the correspondent of National Icelandic TV and radio in Russia and CIS countries, Dmitry Chernetsov, the documentary films director, director - animator Ivan Maksimov, Lobster Godines Laso, the Cuban artist and cinematologist Natalia Serova.

The program of the festival included the action «Chair of Good» within the framework of which the organizers carried out charitable actions and prepared gifts – sets of books for children's homes of Vologda and its area. Two most interesting photo-exhibitions were also prepared for Vologda residents. The photo-exhibition by Vyacheslav Sachkov, the documentary films cameraman, film director and honored worker of arts of Russia was opened on November, 28. The author named it simply – «Unique days», because the moments captured in the exhibited photos are unique in their own way. The photo-exhibition «Northern miracle. Solovky. The beginning» by Gennady Smirnov who is a member of the Union of journalists and international association «Union of designers» became one more gift to the visitors of the festival. The pictures of this wonderful place (Solovky) which is, by the way, historically connected with Vologda land, were displayed there.

Sergey Miroshnichenko carried out a master - class for the festival visitors wh ere he told about the project «Born in the USSR» on which he worked since 1989. In brief the history of the project is like this. The idea itself to shoot a documentary film about different people periodically in some years emerged in England in the 1960s. In the 80s this project started in the USA and the USSR. In the Soviet Union the choice of the director who would make a film about the same people each seven years and observe the dynamics of their social and psychological development, fell on S.V.Miroshnichenko. 20 children from all the parts of the Soviet Union were selected for the documentary project. Children from Kirghizia, Lithuania, Georgia, different areas of RSFSR – from the Yaroslavl area, from the Ural, Siberia, from Moscow, Saint Petersburg took part there. The main criterion for selection was «dissimilarity» of the children. The authors of the project wanted to have the whole range of social groups of the country. The first film about seven-year-old children was made in 1989, and it wasn’t noticed. But the second picture «Fourteen-year-olds», was a success: the film received the premium «Emmy», the Award of the British academy, Russian «Stalker». Foreign experts and amateurs began to show real interest in the project.

The purpose of the film director to make a life-long film was transformed together with the collapse of the USSR: now, as he said, the main thing is to show people who were born in that already nonexistent empire, and to see how the dominating ideas of the society of their childhood are reflected in the formation of their characters.

On the film festival in Vologda Miroshnichenko showed already the third part of his film - «21 year old ». The spectators were so interested in this surprising project, that they asked the director to stay after the viewing and to answer some questions.

And the delegation of the participants of the festival showed one more part of this film to the underaged in the colony for minors in Paprikha. Violin player Таmаrа, guitarist Jury Matveev, poet and composer Victor Leonidov and Victor Tsarev the actor of theatre and the cinema, the champion included in «the Ginnes Book of records» with tricks of juggling, organized a small concert for the guys and presented the library of the colony with a complete set of books.

Within the framework of the festival Vladimir Grammatikov, a well-known film director, had a meeting with the pupils of Vologda schools. Surprisingly easily finding common language with the children, he told them about – at first sight pleasant and cheerful, and actually about very complex and troublesome – work of the director of children's films; he told how he selects little actors for his films from thousands of candidates; he told about wh ere and how the films were made and what interesting cases occurred on shootings. And then he presented the new film for the most demanding audience to judge about, the film that has just been finished «Secret of Siberian Princess».

Yury Polovnikov’s native school wasn’t left unnoticed. His son Ivan and cinematologist from Moscow Irina Grashchenkova visited school № 10 in Sokol. The events devoted to the known fellow countryman in his native land have already become a kind of tradition and they are carried out for the fourth time. Only this year they are dated for the film festival in honour of Yury Polovnikov. 7-11 grade students gathered in a hall to hear a story of their fellow countryman’s life, to communicate to those people who remember him and can tell about him. So, Irina Grashchenkova brought a disk with Yury Polovnikov's films and shared her impressions about this creative person. At this meeting schoolchildren saw Yury Polovnikov's film «Bonfires of our childhood» about their peers who grow without parents but to whom their teacher gives a part of his own warm-heartedness and kindness. And then Irina Nikolaevna suggested that they should see one more short film - Vyacheslav Orekhov's «Clouds», who was the so-called «spiritual brother» of the Vologda director. It is simply a flow of clouds, seen as a flow of life, as a pray for Yury Polovnikov's immortality. Except Yury Polovnikov's native land, the events of the festival were held in Cherepovets, Veliky Ustyug, Kirillov and in the settlement Ustye.

The arrival of deacon Andrey Kuraev, the well-known theologian, the professor of the Moscow Ecclesiastical Academy, became one more pleasant gift for the residents of Vologda. He held a seminar «the Place of youngsters in the global world». Having started the conversation rather unusually – with the discussion of the books the world is now interested in («Harry Potter», «the Lord of the rings»), Andrey Kuraev moved to the problems the Orthodox church is concerned with – to the problems of general inspirituality, moral choice, belief and unbelief, religious delimitation of people living in our huge country. The conversation was vivid and easy; father Andrey answered spectators’s numerous questions.

The closing ceremony was the last event of the festival, there the results of the festival were announced. The prize of the Governor of the Vologda area, which was established this year, went to the documentary film «Saint George », director Irakly Kvirikadze - «For the creation of the image of the heavenly patron of many countries and peoples». The main prize «the Best documentary film» went to the authors of «Coal dust », director Maria Miro. While making this film the film crew went down into the mine in Kopeisk, that’s why the award received at the festival is called «For courage and an active civic stand». The main prize «the Best animated film» was awarded to «Zhykharka», director Oleg Uzhinov. The Yury Polovnikov prize went to the documentary film «the First height », director Andrey Pavlenko («For search of the decision of the most complicated spiritual problems of modern Russia»). The Vasily Belov prize «May harmony be in soul» for the best screenplay went to the animated film «The New Year fantasy of Murlyka Cat» (authors of the script Galina Beda and Lyudmila Zakrzhevskaja). The prize was presented by O.S.Belova, the spouse of the writer.

At the final press conference V.V.Ratsko, the co-chairman of the organizing committee of the film festival, the chief of the Department of Culture, emphasized once again, that film festivals in Russia had become a usual thing, and the Vologda area is proud of the original Festival of documentary and animated films which has the name of Yury Polovnikov, our outstanding fellow countryman and documentary film director.
