Year of Culture announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin has officially started in Vologda

Representatives of the creative community of Vologda – writers, poets, directors of theatre and cinema, photographers and journalists – were invited to the solemn event that was opened by Head of the City Yevgeny Shulepov in the centre of culture “Red Corner” on January 23, 2014.

Yevgeny Shulepov addressed the representatives of culture and art: “Vologda has entered the Year of Culture with the solid luggage of bright events and talented names. But now they make even higher demands of us. Vologda must confirm its status of the cultural capital of the Russian North. It is our common goal”.

The Mayor of Vologda named seven priority projects of our city for the near future: modernization of the library system, improvement of the elementary education, development of music and choreographic culture and museum affairs, restoration of monuments of wooden architecture, and support of young talents.

“We are ready to support all interesting initiatives and suggestions that will be useful for cultural and spiritual and moral growth of local residents”, said Yevgeny Shulepov.

The program of the Year of Culture in Vologda includes several large events on all creative grounds of Vologda.

The regional centre will host the City Research and Practice Conference of Pupils “World through Culture” in February, the traditional Pancake Week in March, the Tenth Open International Festival of Multimedia Art “Multimatograf” and the All-Russian Choir Festival in April.

Spectacular international events will be held in June and July: events marking the Year of Shakespeare within the framework of the Days of English Culture and the Festival of Young European Cinema “VOICES”.

The Interregional Belov Readings will tak place in Vologda in December.
