Ded Moroz, a key figure of the New Year celebrations in Russia, Vice-President of 2014 Sochi Olympic Committee Sergei Bondarenko and Vologda Oblast Governor Oleg Kuvshinnikov participated in the solemn opening the residence.

Located in the very heart of the Olympic Park and next to the new Iceberg Sports Palace, it will attract sportsmen and guests to the 22nd Olympic Games. Guests from the Houses of Friendship of the Olympic partners also participated in the solemn opening of the Olympic residence. Throughout the Olympic and the Paralympic Games, Every day about 75,000 people will be able to visit the residence. The legendary character’s house was built using elements of the wooden architecture techniques unique to the Russian North.

Russian Ded Moroz from Veliky Ustyug is recognized as the official Ded Moroz of the Sochi Winter Olympics. Ded Moroz who took up residence 11 kilometers from the splendid northern city of Veliky Ustyug received an official Sochi 2014 diploma from Sochi CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko in 2009.

“My helpers and I are glad to greet everyone in the southern residence that was specially built for the 2014 Winter Olympics. My hometown is in Veliky Ustyug, an ancient city in Russia’s North-West. Located in the north - east of the Vologda Oblast, it seems in some ways miraculously untouched by time. In some areas one gets a sense of what the city might have looked like in the 18th century. In fact it is an open-air museum. Here, in the south of Russia, I will try to provide visitors with a taste of the unique atmosphere of Russia’s North, its diverse cultures and traditions”, said Ded Moroz at the official opening of his residence.

In his welcoming speech, Vologda Oblast Governor Oleg Kuvshinnikov thanked Sochi’s CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko for his assistance in the opening of Ded Moroz’ residence in Sochi. The residence of Ded Moroz has a throne room, a post office, a folk arts and crafts shop, a cafe and a personal room of the main holiday season miracle-maker. Children, adults and guests to the Games will be treated to dancing, singing, workshops in traditional crafts and fun sport activities. Throughout the Olympic and the Paralympic Games, Ded Moroz will cheer on the athletes, encouraging them to set new world records. He will personally entertain guests in his southern residence and communicate with children and their parents, all other time his helpers will work there.

Mr. Kuvshinnikov noted that two athletes from the Vologda Oblast – Artyom Kuznetsov (speed skating) and Yulia Chekalyova (cross country skiing) – are in the Russian Olympic team.

Vice-President of the 2014 Olympic Committee Sergei Bondarenko agreed that the residence of Ded Moroz at the Sochi Olympic Park will be one of Sochi’s most famous tourist attractions; it will become a magnet both for children and adults, Russians and foreigners.

Every day throughout the Olympic and the Paralympic Games, the southern residence of Ded Moroz will welcome guests from around the world. Visitors will also be able to meet Ded Moroz, take part in master classes, sample traditional Russian dishes, and visit the workshops of folk artists and craftsmen. A post office that delivers letters to Ded Moroz is located at the entrance to the House.
