On March, 5, in the Shalamov House of the Picture
Gallery there opened a personal exhibition of color monotypes by Nikolay
Mishusta « Enchanted».
Since time immemorial artists devoted their works to the woman, thus
expressing the then ideal of beauty, formulating ethical and aesthetic
predilections of generations, thus characterizing the attitude of
contemporaries to history and the present day.
The theme is perfectly embodied in the creative work of the Vologda
master, the graphic artist and painter Nikolay Mishusta. In the modern
art language he opens some kind of a historical retrospective showing
the treatment of a female image in the art of Ancient Greece and Babylon
upto the present. This reference to history gives the artist the richest
opportunities of figurative and art disclosing of the theme of female
beauty.
Graphic quality and expressiveness of gesture are paid great attention
to in the work devoted to a proud image of tsarina of Egypt Cleopatra,
mystery and rich color scale contribute to special pathos of bible plots
with female characters of Rachel, Leah or Bathsheba. The artist doesn't
forget the Russian theme either treating the image of northern beauty in
traditions of the well-known "кустодиевской" manner of painting of the
beginning of XX century.
The reference to female characters allows Nikolay Mishusta to widely use
allegorical language for the decision of figurative tasks of the works.
This method finds reflection in the theme of motherhood, and in the
allegorical image of the young Spring decorating the hair with gentle
flowers, and in the mature female figure, symbolizing Summer which is
represented near to a magnificent still-life from colors and fruit.
Excitedly the artist develops dreamlike compositions filled with
historical household details, be it the image of ladies - rivals in
magnificent crinolines of XVIII century or the generalized female
portrait types in smart costumes and hats with feathers and flowers of
XIX century, romantic horse walks of lovers or meetings in gardens.
It is necessary to note one more prominent aspect uniting all artist’s
works submitted to the exhibition. This is his special attitude to the
chosen theme which is based on the idea of reflecting beauty and harmony
of the female nature.
For the last decades author's favourite technique is monotype. It's this
type of graphic art that has allowed him to show the professional
opportunities in all their diversity, to discover his creative
individuality. Unlike other kinds of engraving, monotype cannot be
reprinted. During his work the artist receives a unique exclusive print.
And consequently, when actually being a print technique, monotype
incorporates advantages of both the original graphic art and painting.
The artist practising the monotype should possess both feeling for
graphic and colour.
These two beginnings: discipline and emotional splash - distinguish both
creative and human character of the Vologda artist Nikolay Mishusta. The
unique method of multilayered monotype produced by Nikolay Mishusta is
similar to that of the classical school painters who were creating their
works step by step beginning with a sketch, through an underpainting to
the glazing. This is responsible for the depth of the picturesque tone,
the internal luminescence that amazes us in the works by the modern
Vologda artist.
