Vladimir Korbakov died in one of the hospitals of Vologda at 3 o’clock in the morning on October 28. He died at the age of 91 following a stroke. Vladimir Korbakov was taken off to hospital on Saturday, October 26. But his health didn’t improve.

According to preliminary data, the lying-in-state ceremony will take place on October 30. Its venue and time are being specified now.

It is worth reminding that Vladimir Nikolaevich Korbakov was born in 1922. He spent his childhood and youth in Vologda. After leaving school, he studied in the studio of the Artists’ Union in 1940. He started to work in the workshop of the Art Fund in 1941 and then volunteered for frontline duty in the same year. He was seriously wounded in the battles of Moscow in 1942 and had four operations.

Vladimir Korbakov graduated from the Moscow Art School with honours in 1951 and entered Moscow State Academic Art Institute named after V.I. Surikov. He returned to Vologda in 1958 and was admitted as a member of the Union of Russian Artists in 1959. He became the Honoured Artist of the RSFSR in 1972 and the People’s Artist of Russia in 1998. He headed the Vologda branch of the Union of Russian Artists from 1964 to 1977.

Vladimir Korbakov was awarded the title of the honoured freeman of Vologda in 1997. He became the full member of the Russian Academy of Arts in 2007.
